In England, the Homes and Communities Agency have set up a sort of logical and functional system standard for large developments, typically housing,
Urban design deals with the overall aspect and context of such a project, and how a particular site answers to the set of natural questions regarding a space: movement solutions, street layout, active frontages, views and vistas, landmarks and so on.
All these aspects are explained in this compendium, and brought forward as a model to follow when designing at such a large scale.

When the Urban Design Compendium was first published in 2000, it noted that quality of design was becoming one of the most important criteria in determining whether a project should beEligible for public funding. Since this time understanding of the importance of design quality in creating places people want to live and work in has grown. It is therefore vital that those evaluating the quality of design proposals have some guidance on what forms of urban design work well and why. Similarly those developing proposals need
Information on what will be expected of them in terms of their investment in project design.

Hence, the Urban Design Compendium.
