Cabe-design coding

Formed in 1925 as the Incorporated Association of Architects and Surveyors, the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE) is a leading body for professionals specialising in the design, construction, evaluation and maintenance of buildings.

Its members practise across the United Kingdom, mainland Europe and around the World, and work in both the private and public sectors. Since 1999, Design Council Cabe has provided expert design consultation, Design Review and training.

Creating sustainable communities is not just about providing the homes, jobs, transport and

other services that people need. It also involves raising the quality of what we build and giving local people more of a say in the way their community develops.

Design codes bring together the professionals involved in planning, urban design and

highways, along with local residents, landowners and developers, future owner or tenants and anyone else who might be directly involved in the newly built space.

These principles are not a new idea. They have been used in one form or another since the Renaissance, and possibly earlier. While much has been said and written about them, opinions still vary. Are the codes an unwanted American import, reflected in developments like Seaside, Florida? Do they stifle creativity? Or can they help secure well-designed neighbourhoods? These are some of the questions addressed in "Design Coding: Testing its use in England", a report CABE has produced in partnership with ODPM and English Partnerships, following a year of extensive research and on-the-ground testing in England.

The report offers light into the process of real practice of designing and delivering while abiding by a set of logical rules that are in majority overall applicable, or even ones that are directly related to a particular site. Once the decision has been made to prepare, in first instance, one such design code, a complex process begins. From there on, after drafting, masterplanning and legalizing, the codes become directly involved into real life projects. After being monitored for a period of time, they can be applied to a prospective development.
