The urban design compendium offers guidance on designing a fit development, wherever the site may be. One of the foremost important criteria to a successful building project is the ease of movement throughout the space, but also through its connections with the outside, existing world.

If it is the case of housing developments, pedestrians and the way they access the place is critical. Even so, cyclists will be using their bicycles and vehicles cannot be overruled.

Every aspect of movement must be well considered.

Walking

In Accordia, as one roams along the streets, many positive aspects can be found.

With its location, it is set back from the main traffic streets nearby. Connections with the space are made via streets that divide up the site at relatively regular intervals, making it easy for pedestrians to access the area, from a multitude of points.

Because it is a housing development, people are expected to only use their vehicles as a means of coming and leaving home. Therefore, the site has been designed with a highly controlled traffic street layout.

As one walks through Accordia, it is easy to notice the division of spaces. Smaller areas with similar design within themselves but distinctive from all the rest make for a simple mind map that one can use to guide himself through the space.

The well light streets are clearly visible throughout the entire night. Wide sidewalks that blend in the height, surface and colour of the streets, and large-radius road turns provide for a safe space for walking.
